Silver Nitrate Manufacturing

(So you have a death wish, huh?)

 

So, your too cheap to buy silver nitrate?  We’ll I guess that makes two of us J Or maybe you can’t obtain Silver Nitrate in your area of the world. Whatever the case, here’s what your want to read

 

Let me start by saying this is the most incredibly dangerous, and incredibly simple thing to do.

 

The first thing you need to do, is on a 4 LARGE sheets of paper write the following:

 

Ag + HNO3 à AgNO3 + NO + H20

 

2NO + 02 à 2NO2 ßà N2O4

 

I Mixed Silver and Nitric Acid!  I was exposed to Nitrogen Dioxide!  I am probably suffocating on my own fluids.

 

Now, Take one of the sheets and Tape it to your Chest, Take another and Tape it to your back, give the third to your Next of kin and put the 4th one next to your phone.  You will want to keep these papers in place for at least 72 hours.  This way when the paramedics come, the will now what you did to kill yourself (or your family, or your neighbors)!  If your not dead, they will at least have some idea how to help you breath.

 

Oh the other NEAT part about Nitrogen Dioxide exposure,  you will feel fine for several hours to a day, then the Edema will set in (swelling of the lungs) and you will slowly suffocate to death by choking on you own fluids J 

 

To quote from the Merck Index  (#6698, Vol. 12)

"Deadly Poison. ... One of the most insidious gases.  Inflammation of
 the lungs may cause only slight pain or pass unnoticed, but the
 resulting edema several days later may cause death.  100 ppm is
 dangerous for even a short exposure, and 200 ppm may be fatal."

 

The most enjoyable part of this Process (the creation of Silver Nitrate), is being a hypochondriac for 72 hours, constantly checking your breathing, seeing if you can feel the effects of edema setting in, checking your fingernails to see if there turning blue, OH YEA its great fun!  You keep asking yourself if your OK, over and over again. 

 

So, You don’t ever want to breath the brown/gold/yellow fumes produced by this reaction.  You know what else, you don’t want anyone else to do it either!  Guess what happens if your using a fume hood and the power goes out, yup, you will be evacuating your residence!  I’d also imagine that several governing authorities would like to come and talk to you about your adventures.
