Polishing Is Fun!

Hello again!

Here comes some ATM Mirror Porn.  Some people may find some of the images offensive, but I think they are beautiful and a work of art in progress.

When we last left off, I had poured my pitch lap, did two hours polishing on each mirror, built my Foucault tester, and did some LED tests to see which was color was best.  As far as color goes, its becoming clear that white or blue seem to be the best colors of choice.

When you first start polishing, it’s VERY rewarding!  After just a couple hours, your dull frosty mirrors SHINE!  Just don’t get too excited and start to believe you’ll be ready to ship those mirrors out for coating any time soon J

To date (April 5, 2001) I have completed 8 hours of polishing on each mirror, using the same pitch lap.  That’s a total of 16 hours polishing glass, and I guestimate that I am perhaps 50% completed with polishing, maybe a little more.

My current polishing regime is MOT, Mirror A 8 Laps around the barrel then Mirror B for another 8 laps.  I do this for 4 hours, and then acquire some mirror images and call it a day.

My loving and compassionate wife asked if I wanted to come inside and polish! So now you will find me in the living room, polishing atop an old speaker cabinet that must way 70 lbs or more!  The only downside is she gets to run the Remote for the TV J On the plus side; she was kind enough not to force “Judge Judy” onto me J  (God I love this woman!)

Enough Chatting Time for the “NAKED MIRROR ATM PORN”!!!!!

Below is are 2 charts of images, one for each mirror.  From left to right is polishing in increments of 2 hours.  Included in the far right hand columns are links to Animated images.  I’ve included Windows AVI files as well as conventional animated GIF files.  The AVI files are substantially smaller than the GIFs.

My advice would be to check out the animations on Mirror B first, as they seem to be the most interesting to watch J Enjoy, and any feedback is appreciated!  Also see the polishing notes underneath the frame!

Hourly Polishing Notes

Two Hour Polishing Notes

  1. Stroke: 2/3 Center over center MOT (oops…)
  2. Boy are those some ugly mirrors
  3. DON’T use rubber cleats, they heat up the glass and cause deformations!
  4. Center of mirror focuses longer than edge by 0.300 Inch

Four Hour Polishing Notes

  1. Stroke: 1/3 Center over Center MOT
  2. Finally got a white LED to test, looks kind of purple to me
  3. Scratches are greatly reduced J
  4. Center of mirror focuses longer then edge by 0.250 Inch, Making progress!

Six Hour Polishing Notes

  1. Stroke: 1/3 Center over Center MOT
  2. Finally starting to look smooth
  3. still have some flaws near the edges of the mirrors
  4. Center of mirror focuses longer than edge by 0.200 inch.

Eight Hour Polishing Notes

  1. Stroke: 1/3 Center over Center MOT
  2. Center of mirrors are still a little frosty looking,
  3. Got a ronchi Grating to play with J
  4. Ground down the end of the LEDs flat.  This reduced excessive light from screwing with the camera, but left funny looking vertical lines on the images.  Need to smooth off the face of the led with some fine emery cloth..
  5. Center still focuses longer than edge, but now down to 0.125 inch.
  6. Ronchi Video is pretty cool J
  7. Perhaps its time to start a parabalizing stroke to knock the center down a little quicker?  Hmmmmmmm
